local missions

The local outreach ministry of Burke Community Church is based on the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ. In response to God’s love for us and for others, we desire to serve our neighbors so that they also might know Him. We want our words and deeds to point people to our Father in Heaven who is "a father to the fatherless" and "a defender of widows" who "sets the lonely in families" and "leads forth the prisoners with singing" (Ps 68:5-6a).

Our local outreach includes sponsoring and working with organizations such as Sanctity of Life, Lorton Community Action Center, ECHO, Young Life, Child Evangelism Fellowship, and the Good News Jail & Prison Ministry.

August 20 - Back2School Backpack and School Supply Drive, 10am-12pm

ECHO’s school supplies program is so gratefully received by our client families that we start distribution by appointment in mid-summer.  Donations of school supplies are needed right now.  We expect to fill at least 1100 backpacks with grade-appropriate items for school-aged children. There is a long list of requested items on our website at www.echo-inc.org, but we always need the basics: backpacks (new or gently used), rulers, #2 pencils, spiral notebooks, filler paper, binders, school scissors, school glue, pencil boxes, calculators, pocket dictionaries and protractors.

ECHO is grateful to the postal carriers, and postal patrons who made the Drive to Stamp Out Hunger such a success in May.  ECHO received more than 21,000 pounds of non-perishable food for our pantry.  Here are some items we still need more of: 2lb bags of flour and sugar, laundry detergent, facial tissue, shaving razors and shaving cream, deodorant.  Please bring donations to 7205 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm on weekdays, and between 7:00 and 9:00, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

Volunteers are needed at ECHO on  2nd or 3rd Tuesday evenings from 7:00 until 9:00 to assist in the Food Pantry or to accept donations.  On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, we need volunteers to sort and shelve clothing donations and/ or assist clients as they choose clothing and household goods for their families.  Orientation and training is provided.  If you are interested in finding out more, e-mail admin@echo-inc.org to arrange an introductory visit to see what ECHO is like.

For those who have workplace campaigns for United Way or CFC, please remember that ECHO is a participating charity and derives much of its ability to meet the emergency needs of our community from these gifts. Our United Way number is 8426, and our CFC number is 74224.
