For tens of thousands of Americans, the past few weeks have been nothing short of a nightmare. With the federal government employee layoffs, many in our community have been confronted with whiplash-inducing, life-changing circumstances. The road ahead is littered with uncertainty. What are we called to do when we can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel? I almost resent the answer. Trust.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your path straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6
While trust in the Lord provides the ultimate companionship, it would serve us well to remind each other of the community that He has given us here on Earth. The Outward Ministries team, and all other ministries at Burke Community Church understand that life happens at Earth-shattering frequencies. And we want to do what we do best – surround you.
Volunteers from the Employment Ministry team have collaborated to piece together helpful resources for those who have been affected by the recent cutbacks. Alongside our robust resource list, we took the time to sit down with one of our own volunteers who was let go unexpectedly from her position as a result of the federal layoffs. “One day, I was sending out the layoff notices, and the next day, I received one myself”, recalls a member of Burke Community Church and volunteer with the Employment Ministry. She remains hopeful, however. We are a resource-rich community, and she is informed by her faith.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33
