MEN'S MENTORING
Welcome to Mentoring!
Did you know that Burke Community Church has an active Men’s Mentoring Program? Every man benefits from having a Paul, a Barnabas, and a Timothy in their lives. Learn more about the Men’s Mentoring Ministry below, and start the process of getting involved today!
Mentoring at Burke Community Church is a one-on-one ministry which is based on one man helping another man strengthen his walk with Christ.
“Just as iron sharpens iron; so one man sharpens his friend” -Proverbs 27:17
Purpose of the program:
- To glorify God and enhance His Kingdom.
- To provide an opportunity for two men to strengthen their walk with Christ through a one on one relationship.
Note: The Mentoring ministry is not intended to be a counseling program or a formal discipleship program; it is a ministry of prayer, encouragement, friendship & support.
What the protégé gains:
- Growing closer to Christ by sharing current challenges with a more experienced brother in Christ
- Accountability
- A sounding board for life issues
- One-on-one relationship
Timeline:
- Gathering mentors and protégés begins in mid-September and closes after the men’s retreat in October.
- First contact with protégé in November, ideally some men will pair up before the men’s retreat in October and use the retreat to begin building a foundation for their relationship.
- Mentor and Protégé should strive to meet face to face 2 times a month or ZOOM/Facetime; other contacts such as email and texts are encouraged.
- Wrap up in June, with exceptions.
Expectations
- Pray, trust and be honest with one another.
- Be committed to spiritual development
- Meet in person at least once a month but preferably every other week
- Seek to know God and strengthen your walk with Christ
- Commit to confidentiality
The success of the mentoring program depends on having a deep pool of mentors who are willing to serve God by helping another man in his walk with Christ. Could you be one of those men?
Program is:
- Flexible – mentors and proteges arrange their own time and place. Where, when, how and what are up to the pair.
- Reasonable – suggested – 2 face to face or ZOOM meetings per month
- Meaningful – many relationships establish long term friendships through growth in Christ.
- Prayerful- mentor and protégé commit to pray for one another
- Faith-building- strengthens the faith of both protégé and mentor.
- Personal – one on one
- Not open-ended- Mentor Season lasts from Late October to June, although many mentoring relationships continue beyond the season
- Personal, focused, spiritually rewarding.
Traits of a potential mentor:
- Committed to enhancing the Kingdom of God
- Good listener
- Working knowledge of the Bible
- Honest
- Encourager
- Prays
The Mentoring ministry is not intended to be a counseling program or a formal discipleship program; it is a ministry of prayer, encouragement, friendship & support – something each of us can do.
